Framed by wild forest and cradled by a glimmering bay, Piermont is a sanctuary of understated luxury hidden in Tasmania’s remote East Coast.
Envisioned 25 years ago by a German forester, the retreat’s small community of sustainably built lodgings and 180-year-old Homestead that now houses the restaurant effortlessly coexist with nature, providing a comfortable sense of home in the wild. From inside, sweeping views across Great Oyster Bay complete a feeling of immersion in this poetic landscape; the grind of the city is all but a distant memory.
At the retreat’s Pantry, guests may choose to create their own picnic to enjoy down by the charming old boat shed, or bring a bag of apples to the eight horses at the retreat’s polo field. Piermont also boasts two private beaches to the east, the neighbouring pristine Cowrie Beach further south and Stony River just north, as well as an outdoor pool perched beside the shore. For times when energy levels rise, Piermont’s tennis court, kayaks, mountain bikes and other sporting gear await your use.
Scattered amongst she-oaks, gum trees and dune grasses on Piermont Beach are fifteen charming cottages, constructed over 25 years. High on the hill, Piermont’s suites with expansive spa bathrooms seem to float over the treetops across Great Oyster Bay. Piermont cottages are elegantly appointed with a log fire, spa bath, full kitchen, laundry and beachfront deck. Built sustainably with natural materials and set in secluded leafy positions, these unique one, two or three-bedroom cottages redefine serenity.
The captivating natural surroundings are respectfully framed by Piermont’s suites’ understated European elegance, Tasmanian timber surfaces and neutral hues. Expansive spa bathrooms with sea views and cosy bedrooms provide a luxurious yet uncomplicated base in which to unwind. With daily service, a stay at Piermont’s suites leaves little else to do but rest or explore.
The Homestead Restaurant’s award-winning chef collaborates with neighbouring organic farmers and winemakers to curate a constantly evolving, seasonally inspired menu that celebrates the region’s diverse flavours.
On offer are freshly shucked Tasmanian Pacific oysters and abalone from the clear sea stretching beyond the restaurant’s window, grass-fed eye fillet from the green pastures of nearby Cape Grim and heirloom vegetables planted specifically for Piermont by small growers in Launceston. The best of these hand-selected ingredients are prepared using French techniques infused with subtle cues to Piermont’s Argentinian heritage, and finished with micro-herbs from the kitchen garden.
